What is fungal infection: A fungal infection of the skin, is a fungal skin disease.

There are millions of fungi. They live in soil, plants, household surfaces, and skin, and sometimes cause skin problems such as rashes or bumps.

Symptoms of fungal infection

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Scaly skin
  • Swelling
  • Blisters

Types of fungal infections

Ringworm


Ringworm is also called tinea corporis instead of roundworms. But fungal skin infections get its name from a ring-shaped rash with curved, worm-like edges.

Ringworm can be spread through direct contact with infected people or animals. You can also pick them up in clothes or furniture. Heat and humidity can help spread infection.

Symptoms of ringworm

Ringworm is a red, flat, round rash that can occur on scaly skin. The outside of the lesion may be raised, while the skin in the middle looks normal. The red dots or rings may overlap.

Your doctor can diagnose eczema based on your symptoms. They may ask you if you have been in contact with an infected person or animal. They can also take a sample from the area and check it under a microscope to make sure.

Treatment of ringworm

Treatment usually involves the use of antifungal drugs on the skin. You can use non-permanent creams, such as:

  • Clotrimazole
  • Miconazole (Micatin, Monistat-Derm)
  • Terbinafine (lamicil)

In more severe cases, you may need to apply prescription drugs to the skin or take it by mouth.

Fungal infection

Fungal infection treatment

Treatment depends on the infection. The cream can cure almost all fungal dermatitis. For vaginal infections, you can use suppositories.

Medicated mouthwashes or lozenges that dissolve in the mouth can treat oral fungal infections. If you have a severe infection or a weakened immune system, you may need oral antifungal medications.
